Bronze Casting is the art of shaping a mold with molten bronze in a furnace
Bronze is a very soft, light metal which has many useful characteristics. Because of these qualities, bronze was once the most popular metal used for armor, weaponry, and other large industrial projects. Today, the most commonly cast metal for these projects is aluminum due to its corrosion-resistance, pliability, and easy-to-work qualities. Despite these modern day metals, however, bronze is still a valuable metal for jewelry, sculpting, and home decorations.
The process of bronze casting begins with a block of solid, clean metal, such as steel or zinc. This block is shaped by rolling it into a cylindrical shape, which is then struck in a die with a spindle, a type of rotating drum that shapes the metal. The roll or cylinder is then forced by a rotary motion against a stationary drum, shaping the metal as it goes. There are two types of dies to use in this process; rotary and centrifugal. Centrifugal dies leave little or no residual wax in the final product, while rotary dies deposit much more wax.
a number of different ways to cast bronze
There are a number of different ways to cast bronze, but the easiest way is with a simple, yet versatile mold. In my own examples of sculptures, I used a PVC rubber mold, which is a plastic sheet that is rolled onto a wooden frame with hollows cut into it. After pouring the wax mixture into the mold, I allowed it to dry completely and then cut out the pieces of sculpture from the resulting mold, which were then trimmed to fit together properly.
For most bronze casting projects, you’ll likely be working with a relatively small amount of detail. This means that you will have the freedom to choose the types of casting techniques that you feel are best for your individual sculptures. For example, if you have a highly skilled hand, you may opt for a hand-blown, intricately detailed bronzes. If you don’t mind a bit of chipping, you can use a machine press to create intricate detail on a smaller scale. Of course, beginners should stick to simpler detail such as facial features and hair, as well as geometric designs or logos.
Bronze casting is commonly founded on masonry surfaces
These surfaces have an added advantage in that they aid in creating a smooth, sturdy foundation for the sculpture, as well as help the artist to apply more weight and pressure onto the casting when shaping it. Due to the thermal conductivity of these materials, these foundries offer a much smoother production environment than traditional wood fired stoves or metal lathes. These foundries are typically found in modern day factories, but in years past, they were commonly found in local blacksmith shops or other forms of artisan working environments.
Today, bronze has become one of the most popular artistic mediums in the world, used by sculptors from all over the globe to bring to life their unique vision. The classic bronze sculptures that can be found today are a true representation of art, as the timeless beauty that can be found in miniatures and enlivened with color and creativity. Whether it be statues that are crafted from a variety of materials to animals that are sculpted from clay, there is a type of bronze sculpture that is sure to fit the decor of any home or office. From highly skilled artists to amateurs, bronze casting is quickly becoming a leading profession in the arts, with artists creating works of art that will be enjoyed for generations.
