The problem even has a name: the skilled trades shortage.<sup>[1]<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a shame so many younger workers are choosing other fields because there can be many benefits to a career as an HVAC technician, electrician or welder.<sup>[2]<\/sup> From healthy job growth and pay to the fulfillment of working with your hands and seeing projects through from start to finish, the skilled trades have a lot to offer.<sup>[3]<\/sup><sup>[4]<\/sup><sup>[5]<\/sup><sup>[6]<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Sound pretty good? Wondering where to sign up? Well, getting \u201cqualified\u201d is a good place to start, and vocational training is one way to do it.<sup>[7]<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Learn more about the skilled trades labor gap and the role <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rsi.edu\/blog\/hvacr\/why-vocational-training-matters-for-hvac-technicians\/\">vocational training<\/a> can play in filling it, as well as helping to improve job opportunities in specific fields.<\/p>\n<h2>How Vocational Training Could Help Meet Demand for Skilled Trades Workers<\/h2>\n<p>\u201cSomewhere along the line a decision was made that everybody needs to go to college, and it was something less worthy working with your hands and doing these skilled jobs,\u201d <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/realestate\/when-expert-tradespeople-are-hard-to-find\/2018\/04\/18\/f668d874-2d4b-11e8-8688-e053ba58f1e4_story.html?utm_term=.b27b03faadec\">explained Eric Thorkilsen<\/a>, the chief executive of This Old House Ventures.<\/p>\n<p>One of the major reasons there aren\u2019t enough qualified skilled tradespeople is that younger generations have largely chosen college over trade school, despite the <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/newshour\/education\/im-telling-students-go-college\">high student loan debt<\/a> and diminishing returns on a bachelor\u2019s degree for many graduates.<\/p>\n<p>However, a consensus is forming among industry insiders, business owners, researchers and even the President that vocational training may provide a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rsi.edu\/blog\/skilled-trades\/white-paper-skilled-trades-career-training-solutions\/\">solution to the skilled labor shortage<\/a>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Lowe\u2019s is partnering with 60 other businesses and organizations to promote an initiative called \u201c<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/lowes-skilled-trades-gap-2019-4\">Gen T<\/a>,\u201d which will include a national online marketplace for jobs and education programs.<\/li>\n<li>President Trump recently signed the <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/115th-congress\/house-bill\/2353\">Strengthening Career and Technical Education for the 21st Century Act<\/a> to reform technical and career education.<\/li>\n<li>The <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalskillscoalition.org\/\">National Skills Coalition<\/a> cites education and training as a path for unemployed workers and those in low-wage jobs to transition into middle-skill jobs they can support their families with and help meet national demand for qualified labor in this sector. Middle-skill jobs are those that require a credential beyond a high school diploma but not a college degree.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>What Are the Benefits of Vocational Training?<\/h2>\n<p>Not only can vocational training lead to careers as an HVAC technician, solar panel installer or welder but also it has many <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rsi.edu\/blog\/skilled-trades\/trade-school-vs-college-the-pros-and-cons\/\">advantages when compared to college<\/a>.<sup>[8]<\/sup><sup>[9]<\/sup><sup>[10]<\/sup><\/p>\n<h3>Short Training Time<\/h3>\n<p>Vocational programs can be as short as four months and as long as two years. Compare this to the four years or more necessary to earn a bachelor\u2019s degree.<sup>[11]<\/sup><sup>[12]<\/sup><\/p>\n<h3>Lower Cost<\/h3>\n<p>Vocational school can be less expensive than a university: <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.trade-schools.net\/articles\/trade-school-cost.asp\">$3,000 to $15,000<\/a> per year versus <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/nces.ed.gov\/fastfacts\/display.asp?id=76\">$26,120 a year<\/a> for four-year institutions in the 2015-2016 school year.<\/p>\n<h3>Hands-On Learning<\/h3>\n<p>If you don\u2019t learn well by sitting in a classroom hearing a teacher lecture about theories and concepts all day, then the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rsi.edu\/blog\/articles\/why-is-hands-on-training-important-when-learning-hvac-technology\/\">hands-on training<\/a> offered at a vocational school could be a better fit.<sup>[13]<\/sup><\/p>\n<h3>Career Potential<\/h3>\n<p>One nice thing about vocational school is that it can lead to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rsi.edu\/blog\/skilled-trades\/skilled-trades-careers-numbers-data-need-know\/\">careers with healthy potential<\/a>. For example, the Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts jobs for HVAC technicians to be added at a rate of 15 percent through 2026, nearly twice the national average for all occupations.<sup>[14]<\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Some college grads <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/here-are-the-college-grads-still-suffering-in-the-job-market\/\">struggle to enter the job market<\/a> and end up working at jobs that don\u2019t require a degree, such as being a barista at a coffee shop.<\/p>\n<p>Neither vocational school nor college guarantees jobs. But college can be a bigger investment, and some types of degrees can be applied in the working world better than others.<sup>[15]<\/sup><\/p>\n<h2>How Can Training Improve Career Opportunities in the Skilled Trades?<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.rsi.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/career-training-at-the-refrigeration-school.jpg\" alt=\"career training at the refrigeration school\" width=\"870\" height=\"337\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-8001\" \/><\/p>\n<p>When researching a career, you\u2019d help yourself by referencing the <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/ooh\/\">Bureau of Labor Statistics<\/a> (BLS). If you\u2019re interested in a career in the trades, learning the skills they\u2019re looking for can help improve job opportunities. Where can you learn such skills?
